Using WordPress and the Block Editor to Create and Publish Posts

The WordPress Block Editor makes it easy to create beautiful, engaging blog posts with its user-friendly interface and wide array of customizable blocks. Whether you’re sharing news, tutorials, or stories, the Block Editor gives you the tools to make your content shine. Here’s a quick guide on how to create, edit, and publish your posts—plus essential tips to check before you hit publish.

Creating Your Post

  1. Start a New Post: Log into your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Posts > Add New. This opens the Block Editor.

  2. Add a Title: At the top, you’ll see a placeholder for your post title. Add a clear and engaging headline.

  3. Build Your Content: Use the "+" button or type "/" to insert blocks for paragraphs, headings, images, videos, galleries, and more. Drag and drop blocks to rearrange your layout.

  4. Format Your Post: Customize block styles, adjust alignments, and add links to enhance readability and engagement. Take advantage of reusable blocks for content you post often.

If you’re new to publishing posts, check out this short YouTube video on the basics of publishing a post (opens in a new tab) for a quick walkthrough. You can also explore the official WordPress Block Editor documentation (opens in a new tab) for more detailed guidance.

Pre-Publishing Checklist

Before publishing your post, follow these steps to ensure it’s polished and ready to share with your audience:

  1. Set a Featured Image: • Choose a visually appealing image that represents your content. • Make sure it has a 16:9 aspect ratio for compatibility across platforms. • To set it, click on the Settings panel (gear icon), then under Post, select Featured Image and upload or choose an existing image.

  2. Cross-Post to Facebook: If you’ve integrated your WordPress site with Facebook, double-check that the option to cross-post is enabled. In the Settings panel, scroll to the Social section and verify the box for Facebook sharing is checked.

  3. Review Your Copy and Images: • Proofread your post for spelling, grammar, and formatting errors. • Check all images and videos to ensure they display correctly. • Test your links to avoid broken URLs.

  4. Consider Your Subscribers: Remember, when you publish a post, your email subscribers will receive a notification. Ensure your content is complete and accurate before publishing.

Publishing Your Post

Once you’ve completed the checklist, you’re ready to publish:

  1. Click the Publish button at the top right corner of the editor.
  2. Confirm your publishing settings, such as the visibility (public, private, or password-protected) and the publish date.
  3. Hit Publish again to make your post live.

Congratulations! Your post is now live and ready to engage your audience.

By following these steps and pre-publishing checks, you can confidently create and share high-quality content using WordPress and the Block Editor. Happy blogging!
